The Tobacco Intervention Program has three integrated initiatives: the Clinical Tobacco Intervention Recognition Program, the BC Stop Smoking Program, and the Health Coordinator Pilot Project.
Health Coordinator Pilot Project
This two-year project will work with seven practices to pilot an expanded role for Medical Office Assistants as "Health Coordinators". Working with project staff, the Health Coordinators will implement, measure and refine a systematic approach to clinical tobacco intervention in the primary care setting. The approach will also briefly address three risk factors which complicate tobacco cessation: depression, at-risk drinking and inadequate physical activity.
Clinical Tobacco Intervention Recognition Program
In 2003, this program was founded through a partnership with the BC Cancer Agency, Cancer Prevention Programs. The program offers online continuing education courses for healthcare providers. The courses are based on clinical practice guidelines. Tailored courses are available for:
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Dentists
- Dental Hygienists
- Radiation Therapists
- Pharmacists
A tailored course for Medical Office Assistants is currently being developed. More than 1000 BC healthcare providers have taken the courses.
BC Stop Smoking Program
Since 1990, we have been offering BC healthcare providers clinical tools and support to help patients quit tobacco. The tools are based on clinical evidence and incorporate feedback from BC's health professionals. This program has served as a model for similar programs across Canada.
