Darrin Snell’s story - hearts@work
Darrin Snell of Surrey finishes at the final station of his heart health assessment, shakes his head in amazement and says he is “absolutely motivated to change”.
His goal: “increase activity, lose 10 lbs. in six weeks, and lose inches.”
Three weeks after that assessment, we check in with him to see how he is doing. Big changes! After his visit to the screening booth that day, Darrin dusted off his seven year-old treadmill and started using it, jogging 30 minutes every day. He started getting others involved in his commitment to change and convinced his whole family to start walking together after dinners.
Thirteen weeks after the screening, Darrin emails,
“I weighed myself again and according to my scales I'm a total of 13 pounds down, from 203 on May 18th to 190 today!”
Denise Taylor's Story - Director of Aboriginal Health, Interior Health Authority
“It has raised awareness and I think that’s the most exciting piece for me. I get nurses in First Nations communities coming to me all the time and saying: “You know Mr. X came and asked about cholesterol” or “That elder we screened at the powwow got a follow-up doctor’s appointment”.
It’s the seeking out of information that is important. That’s the first step toward change and hearts@work is doing that. It’s given the people the tools to ask the right questions.”
